Rogers, Bell, and Telus Test Inter-Carrier Video Calling Technology
Canada’s three leading wireless operators, Rogers, Bell, and Telus, have completed interoperability testing of a new technology that will enable inter-carrier video calling.
All three carriers offer video calling, but up until now, users have only been able to communicate with people on the same network. Now that all three carriers use HSPA mobile broadband technology, it has become possible for them to mesh networks, which will soon allow their customers to communicate with each another via video link.
“We are proud to be part of the first inter-carrier partnership in North America to enable clients to call each other using video capabilities,” commented Bell Mobility’s Chief Technology Officer, Stephen Howe. “By breaking down the barriers between video calling clients in Canada, we anticipate strong demand for the service – as we saw with past inter-carrier initiatives such as text and picture messaging.”
